The one thing we need is an investment plan. We have scheduled an appointment with a cross border (Canada/US) financial advisor. We’ll both have generous pensions. We have to take into account tax implications since the IRS says that I, as a US citizens, can’t invest in Passive Foreign Investment accounts without hefty penalties. So we need to see how we can make this work when we move to Canada. My husband is a Canadian citizen and I’ll feel more comfortable with our investments can be in both our names and then maybe we can have an individual account on the side. Very new for us and we hope our advisor (fiduciary) will give us a roadmap when we meet next year

I work in personal finance and I am so sick of people spouting the nonsense that it’s the economy why they cannot get ahead. 90% of the time, it’s my clients that are at fault. They want what they cannot afford so they choose wants over needs. Or they simply decide to not strive for more. Simple as that.

These people are not scam artists. They give financially sound advice. Most other youtubers are scam artists

When friends ask for money, saying you are a millionaire, you can afford it... If you regularly give in those situations, chances are you are not a self-made millionaire. You need the ability to say no if you want to become self made. Some people are really good at saying no. They have the ability to say no and still maintain friendships. In fact those friends have more respect for them than they would for someone who always says yes. Why it gets tricky is when they ask, not for you to give them money but to loan them money. But ask yourself, why doesn't he go to a bank for a loan. Why is he asking you? Why? because he's got bad credit, that's why. The bank won't give him a loan. Loaning money to someone with bad credit is a very poor financial decision.

As a financially secure person,, your first mistake is telling people and/or appearing to be that you have money. Act like you have no money, and almost everyone will not ask you for money. And if they do, just say I don't have any to give as I lost in a bad investment

I've dealt with this so many times for so many years. I have set my boundaries with family and friends - even with my own siblings. Setting boundaries changed our relationship for the better. To the friends who viewed it as a bad thing, well - maybe they were not true friends to begin with.

Bill Cosby said a long time ago "sign your own checks and don't loan your friends money. If you have it to let them have, let them have it. What can happen is that you lose your money and your friend"

For many years I was the only one in my family that had any money. We all came from the same place. Eventually I stopped giving family members any money. It never goes to whatever they told me it was for. Now I will maybe buy them something specific. A Washing machine or whatever, but I never give cash. Eventually they stopped asking. They know what the answer will be. Some of them finally got it together thankfully.

FIRE is not FIRE if you are depedant on stock movements. Investment is not freedom. Only Term deposits with gurantees are.

This is a question that I have right now. You mentioned having 36m to by another home to avoid cap gains but stipulate the entire sum. What if you use only part of the proceeds from the sale? How is the remainder taxed? Is half the remainder subject to the progressive rate? Can some of that be mitigated by home reno expenses and cap gains paid in the US? This assuming the sale of a US home while a tax resident in Portugal.

After years of saving and investing, suddenly my bank offered me a car loan and a credit card. I said nah i don't need it, i can afford to pay cash if i need a new car, and i don't need a credit card i can pay cash. I was borrowing money 10 years ago and i couldn't get a loan, and now suddenly they are offering me to loan.

I just want FI and take my chances from there. I'll never sympathize with those who have FI and complain about boredom, lack of purpose, or whatever. Go find some. The point is, you have FI, which is what matters. You are better off than 99% of people your age. Listen to stories of those still working, struggling paycheck to paycheck, to get true anxiety and struggle. And FWIW, great video. I wasn't referring to you guys! Obviously this video is just a warning to make sure people understand. But I have heard many say they lose purpose or are bored in FIRE. They are doing it wrong if so. You should realistically find MORE PURPOSE as now you can pick and choose exactly how you spend your time rather than be tied down to the corporate world. Be it with family, or side gigs you enjoy, volunteering, hobbies, etc. You pick and choose exactly how your day / week plays out.

Example: Navy Federal credit union best share loan rate at 2.25% borrow of your own money. Say u loan yourself $50000 at 5yrs finance charge will be $2900 for all 5 years. Average it out will be $48 of interest charge per month for 5 yrs. I have done this to payoff student loans, bought a few cars this way, and used the borrowed money to invest. Do the math with simple interest calculator with amortization.

Have to be careful with some index funds and ETFs because some of them have oil and gas companies in their portfolios and fossil fuels are cooking the planet.
